PETS. PEOPLE. PURPOSE.

Save An Angel is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organization in Bastrop, Texas on a mission to end pet overpopulation, increase pet retention, and create a compassionate and safe community for pets and people.

We are committed to proactively improving the quality of life for pets by empowering pet parents with the resources and education needed to care and provide for their companions. We operate each day with the motto: Pets. People. Purpose.

Angel's Story

Save An Angel was founded in April of 2010 by Kristie & Johnny Sullens, the parents of a Carolina Yellow Dog named Angel. At just 5 years old, Angel was diagnosed with canine B-cell lymphoma, where the survival rate was less than 2 percent.

From the moment she showed up on their doorstep as a stray puppy, Angel had been their child in every sense, and it was unbearable to imagine their family without her. With a determined spirit, the Sullens refused to give up. They found out there was only one shot at a cure and it was a canine bone marrow transplant. The only problem? The cost... $16,000.

Knowing they were fighting a ticking clock, Kristie and Johnny gave up their wedding rings and honeymoon, sold their personal belongings, and set out on a mission to raise the money needed to save Angel. Save An Angel was born.

In May of 2010, Angel was the 15th dog at North Carolina State University to receive a lifesaving bone marrow transplant and it worked! Angel lived 7 more years 100% cancer-free and passed away in May of 2017 leaving behind a legacy and paving the path for Save An Angel to evolve into the animal welfare organization that it is today, helping thousands of pets and their people for many years to come.

Our Programs

Pet Wellness &
Spay/Neuter Clinic

Without affordable spay & neuter services, pet parents often find themselves with unwanted litters and nowhere to turn. We recognized this need in the community and opened Bastrop County, Texas' first brick-and-mortar, low-cost Spay & Neuter Clinic in December of 2019.

Animal Rescue

Every day we provide lifesaving care to homeless and at-risk dogs and cats that enter our Rescue Program. We believe in going above and beyond to give every animal the care and kindness they deserve.

Our team of dedicated foster families makes it possible for us to take in pets in need, provide medical care and rehabilitation when necessary, and place them into loving, forever homes.

Community Outreach & Education

We provide qualifying pet parents with free veterinary services and empower them with the resources and education needed to properly care for their pets. In September of 2022, we opened the doors to our Pet Resource Center. By providing families with pet food, collars, leashes, ID tags, and other essential items we are able to increase pet retention and keep dogs and cats healthy, happy, and ultimately, at home where they belong.

Operation Relocation
& Emergency Resp.

We work with a network of animal welfare organizations throughout the country to transport pets from high-kill shelters and areas affected by natural disasters to adopters, fosters, and organizations in other states who have the ability and resources to care for these animals.

Thank You to Our Partners

These community members, foundations, and corporate partners support pets in our community through grant funds, above-and-beyond contributions, in-kind, event sponsorship, and more. These partners are key players in making Bastrop and Central Texas a compassionate and safe community for all pets and their parents. We hope you will consider showing them the love they have shown our organization!
