What are the Responsibilities of a Foster Family?
- Provide a safe, clean, caring environment
- Provide water, enrichment (training as needed), and indoor shelter
- Regular updates and photos about your foster pet
- Provide exercise and socialization as appropriate
- Monitor any medical and/or behavioral problems
- Transport to/from any necessary vet appointments
- Transport to/from offsite adoption events or meet and greets
- If the foster pet is sick, isolation from other animals in the home is required for a minimum of 10-14 days.
How Long Can I Expect to Foster a Pet? There are two types of foster situations that you can signup for. Temporary and long-term. Temporary fosters will keep animals an average of 1-4 weeks unless it is medically or behaviorally indicated otherwise. Some pets need more time because of age, illness, injury, or behavior issues. These pets can be in foster for up to 3 months or longer. You will be told up-front before you agree to foster the pet how long a commitment we believe it will be. However, unless a dog is going on transport, there are no guarantees that a home will be found immediately and we ask that foster families commit to keeping the dog until it’s adopted.
