PETS. PEOPLE. PURPOSE.

Save An Angel is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit animal welfare organization empowering pet parents with affordable veterinary care, essential resources, and education.

We are committed to supporting pets and their families through comprehensive, community-driven programs that address critical needs in animal welfare. By eliminating barriers to care and addressing pet overpopulation, our programs work together to build a compassionate and safe community for pets and the people who love them.

We operate each day with the motto: Pets. People. Purpose.

Angel's Story

Save An Angel’s journey began in 2009 in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a fight to save a remarkable dog named Angel. Diagnosed with Canine B-Cell Lymphoma—a disease with a survival rate of less than 2% at the time—Angel faced seemingly impossible odds. To her devoted pet parents, Kristie and Johnny Sullens, Angel wasn’t just a pet; she was family in every sense of the word.

Angel’s only chance at survival was a canine bone marrow transplant, a groundbreaking procedure with a daunting $16,000 price tag—an expense far beyond the reach of most families. Determined not to give up, Kristie and Johnny sacrificed everything they could: selling personal belongings, giving up their wedding rings, and canceling their honeymoon. Yet, it still wasn’t enough. Desperate to save Angel, they launched a grassroots fundraising campaign called Save An Angel.

What followed was extraordinary. Kristie and Johnny poured their hearts into raising the life-saving funds, hosting yard sales, organizing tabling events, and collecting Mardi Gras bead donations—a nod to Louisiana’s cherished tradition—which they resold to support Angel’s treatment. Their local community rallied around them, embracing the cause with unwavering support. As Angel’s story spread, it inspired animal lovers across the country and beyond to donate to help save her life. Against all odds, they reached their fundraising goal and Angel underwent a successful bone marrow transplant at North Carolina State University in early 2010, becoming the fifteenth dog in the world to receive this cutting-edge treatment—and she was cured!

But Angel’s remarkable story didn’t end there.

Our Programs

Pet Wellness &
Spay/Neuter Clinic

Without affordable spay & neuter services, pet parents often find themselves with unwanted litters and nowhere to turn. We recognized this need in the community and opened Bastrop County, Texas' first brick-and-mortar, low-cost Spay & Neuter Clinic in December of 2019.

Animal Rescue

Every day we provide lifesaving care to homeless and at-risk dogs and cats that enter our Rescue Program. We believe in going above and beyond to give every animal the care and kindness they deserve.

Our team of dedicated foster families makes it possible for us to take in pets in need, provide medical care and rehabilitation when necessary, and place them into loving, forever homes.

Community Outreach & Education

We provide qualifying pet parents with free veterinary services and empower them with the resources and education needed to properly care for their pets. In September of 2022, we opened the doors to our Pet Resource Center. By providing families with pet food, collars, leashes, ID tags, and other essential items we are able to increase pet retention and keep dogs and cats healthy, happy, and ultimately, at home where they belong.

Operation Relocation
& Emergency Resp.

We work with a network of animal welfare organizations throughout the country to transport pets from high-kill shelters and areas affected by natural disasters to adopters, fosters, and organizations in other states who have the ability and resources to care for these animals.

Thank You to Our Partners

These community members, foundations, and corporate partners support pets in our community through grant funds, above-and-beyond contributions, in-kind, event sponsorship, and more. These partners are key players in making Bastrop and Central Texas a compassionate and safe community for all pets and their parents. We hope you will consider showing them the love they have shown our organization!
